Bioneers 2023
Sharing of Public Knowledge: to create open forums within and beyond academic spaces to better engage broader communities in a critical understanding of socio-historical experiences of Native peoples and ongoing political, environmental, social, and cultural struggles.
Upholding Inter-Tribal Unity: to bring together different Indigenous communities to share their knowledge, experiences, and resources to achieve common goals, overcome challenges, and promote greater solidarity and understanding among Indigenous peoples.
Conducting Research: Research helps us understand complicated issues in a systematic way, which can enhance public knowledge and civic engagement.
Educating to Enact Change: only through the sharing of knowledge and open debate can we develop new ideas that can inform policy decisions and contribute to social change.
Support Native Students: to provide scholarships for Bay Area Native students in the legacy of the 13 students who took over Alcatraz
Indians of All Tribes is a 501c(3) organization aimed at educating the community about issues related to Indigenous People of the Americas. The organization, incorporated in 2022, was born from the 1969 Takeover and Occupation of Alcatraz Island which was abandoned federal property at that time. Students lead by LaNada Means and others, seized the island in a show of self-determination.
By February of 1970, LaNada, now Dr. LaNada War Jack, authored a proposal for a University and Cultural Center on Alcatraz aimed at educating American Indian students academically and culturally. Although the students couldn’t hold the island in perpetuity and were forcibly removed in June 1971, their actions created a pivot by then President Nixon, to cease the forcible termination of tribes and the removal of people from their land.
IOAT celebrates the anniversary of the Occupation and those who committed to it during the nineteen-month period. However, several members believed that we needed to do more to push for the Cultural Center called for in 1970.
Indians of All Tribes was incorporated in 2022 as a non-profit organization born from the 1969 Native Student Takeover and Occupation of Alcatraz Island. In the legacy of the Occupation and the students, we hold the mission to research, educate, and address issues that impact Indigenous communities.Vision:
